The Journey of Blue Jax – p.10

Jax held her breath. A legendary Biding Bird, sitting in her hand. She couldn’t believe it, but knew it must be true. She could feel it settling into her palm, tucking its wings under its feet.

“Well, it seems to like you well enough,” said the troll. “Now let’s discuss payment.”

“Payment? I never agreed to buy it,” Jax replied, but could not help feeling sad at the thought of giving the bird back to the troll.

“Bah, of course you’ll buy it. How else are you going to survive the winter away from your clan? Let the Biding Bird keep the cold until next summer, keep your hunger until you find food…”

“Does it really work that way?” She brought her other hand up to help shelter the invisible bird from the wind, though she couldn’t tell whether it made a difference.

The troll crossed his arms, tucking each hand into an armpit. “Why do you think it is invisible to you?”

Jax shrugged. “I guess because it’s a mythic creature with special powers.”

“Ha! An honest answer. No, simple fairy child, the bird is biding its time until the new owner makes a request. You may feel that it is in your hand, but it exists in another realm where we cannot go, seeing what we cannot see. It has taken to you, you can feel that. It is asking to be bought.”
