The Journey of Blue Jax – p.11

Jax was sure that the Biding Bird wasn’t the least bit interested in being bought or sold, but she couldn’t deny that it was being friendly…unless the troll was lying, and the bird acted that way with everyone all the time. The longer it sat in her hand, however, the more reluctant she was to let it go. “If I were interested in buying, which I’m not saying I am, but if I were,” she said, trying to sound nonchalant, “how much?”

The troll was grinning even wider than before. “How much what?”

“How much money for the bird?”

“Oh, when did I say I’d take money for it?”

Jax felt her insides clench. “I thought trolls only cared about money.”

“We care about riches, as a group, if you like to generalize,” he said, “but for such a treasure as a Biding Bird, I think more than money must change hands.” He squatted on the ground, crossing his legs as he sat. “First, why don’t you tell me what you’re doing out here. I am sure there must be some value in your journey or else you wouldn’t be making it.”

Jax did not want to sit on the cold ground and have a pow-wow in the falling snow with a greedy troll, but she could think of nothing in her possession that would pay for the Biding Bird, and each moment she held it, her desire to own it grew stronger.

So, she sat.
