Shaardul Cleans Up – p.2

Shaardul loved to take naps in the sun. The jungle where he lived was dense and shady, so when he wanted to find a sunny spot he walked to the southern edge, where the trees and undergrowth gave way to a sloping hill, covered in soft grass.

Fortunately for the other animals who grazed there, Shaardul was more interested in naps than hunting, most of the time. Since he was young, and had parted from his mother and siblings earlier than he should, he wasn’t very skilled at hunting anyway.

On one such afternoon, Shaardul had been dozing for a couple of hours when he felt something tickling his whiskers. He twitched without opening his eyes, and was about to go back to sleep when the tickle returned, followed by a series of bumps along his side. He lifted his head and looked around, and discovered that he had become an impromptu playground for a couple of baby monkeys. They were overjoyed to see him awake, and began jumping around and squealing.

Shaardul stood, grunted, walked a few paces away, and lay back down. The baby monkeys followed, thinking it was a game, and soon were climbing on his back and making noise again. He tuned them out and fell back to sleep.
