Shaardul Cleans Up – p.4

The tigers in the jungle where Shaardul lived were not social creatures, but they overheard things from other animals’ conversations, and decided to meet up to discuss the rumors.

On a clear night under a gibbous moon, the tigers met at the base of a dead tree near the western edge of the jungle. It took a while for their meeting to start, since they were not accustomed to being near each other, and had to do a lot of shifting and circling to make sure everyone had a large enough space in which to sit.

An older male spoke first. “The word has reached to each corner of our home,” he said. “The one called Shaardul is accused of allowing prey to make sport of him. Can anyone confirm these words?”

“Yes,” said a female. “I was curious about the tale myself, so I ventured south to see with my own eyes, and it is true. Shaardul sleeps among the monkeys, and they climb on him as if he were their mother or sibling.”

The other tigers growled and called out: “Shameful!” “How dare he?” “What should we do?”

The older male stood and walked into the center of their circle, and spoke again. “Obviously, his behavior must be stopped, one way or another.”
