Story #6 – Slumber Bumm and the Red Wolf’s Toast – p.4

The red wolf was stunned, but quickly realized that somehow he’d communicated with the sleeping bear. He just had to figure out how to howl at the proper frequency and pitch to tell him to open the cage.

He howled again. Slumber Bumm once more walked away, and returned…with another piece of toast.

All night, the wolf howled. He howled high, he howled low. He howled in every way his voice would allow, and each time, the result was the same. By daybreak, the floor of his cage was covered in toast. The red wolf was exhausted, his throat hurt, and he was feeling more depressed than ever. Slumber Bumm was still standing by the cage, snoring.

Suddenly, Big Bob Burr came running by, and skidded to a halt when he saw the bear. “Thank my stars that you didn’t run off,” he said, panting. “That might’ve been my hide! Let’s just take you back to your pen and no one will ever…” It was then that he saw all the toast in the red wolf’s cage. He looked at the wolf, he looked at Slumber Bumm, and then back at the toast. Then he laughed so hard that tears ran down his cheeks.
