Story #6 – Slumber Bumm and the Red Wolf’s Toast – p.6

After another Saturday night of circus goings-on, Big Bob Burr walked by the red wolf’s cage. He had overheard the crowds that night talking about the “lame wolf” in the sideshow, and decided to do something about it. He looked in on the red wolf, who was still sulking, and put his hands on his hips.

“Hey you, wolf,” he shouted. “Just you wait until later. I’ve had enough of being ignored by the likes of you.” Without a backward glance, the strong man walked off.

The red wolf yawned. He’d barely processed what the man had said. It sounded vaguely threatening but he really couldn’t be bothered to care one way or the other. He drifted off to a shallow sleep, and soon woke to the noise of someone fiddling with the door of his cage. He opened his eyes and saw Slumber Bumm there, picking at the lock with a hair pin.

The red wolf couldn’t believe what was happening. He was finally going to be set free! His sulky mood dropped away and he howled in excitement.

As soon as he howled, though, Slumber Bumm dropped the hair pin, and walked off. He returned later with a piece of burnt toast, and dropped it into the cage.
