Lady Silver of the Spring – p.3

The girl began to panic. She knew how to swim but the spring was deep, and she wasn’t sure if she could hold her breath long enough to reach the ring. She paced, thinking.

The boy has not come back, the ring must not be important, so may hap I needn’t worry about it.

Pace, pace, around the spring.

What if he does come back one day and this ring is indeed a family treasure, or the only thing standing between him and utter poverty?

Pace, pace, around the spring.

I could verily leave the ring down there, where none would dare go. The boy could retrieve it himself in future, with help.

Pace, pace, around the spring.

Thieves and bandits are sometimes desperate, though, it may be that they would risk the dive…

Finally she stopped, picked up a pebble from the ground, and tossed it into the spring, counting the seconds as it raced to the bottom. It was deeper than she had thought, but the girl decided that if she took a very deep breath and swam very fast, she might just make it.
