Lady Silver of the Spring – p.8

The girl was torn between wanting the old woman’s company, and not wanting to hear any more of what she had to say about the ring. She sank to the bottom of the spring, staring at the band of silver on her finger. The longer she stared, the more she wondered, and before long her curiosity overcame her fear, and she swam back to the surface.

The old woman was gone.

The girl spent the rest of that night floating with only her eyes above the water, waiting and watching. She found that the powers of the ring allowed her to do without sleep, and her mind was racing in circles too much for her to try to rest anyway.

The sun rose, and the girl found that the warmth of the rays was wonderful and restorative, so she decided to flip over and float on her stomach, allowing the whole of her body to soak in the sunshine, while her nose and mouth remained safely submerged. The play of the sunlight on the surface of the water made beautiful patterns in the depths of the spring, and she watched them for hours.

Suddenly she heard the swift approach of a horse and then a voice cry out, “Oh, pray that I am not too late!”

If it were me, I would leave a ring *around* the lake. 🙂
