Lady Silver of the Spring – p.11

The day faded into night, and then into another day. The girl came to the surface each morning but never saw another soul. After a time, she stopped coming up at all.

Weeks passed, months, and soon the anniversary of the day she first put the ring on approached. She had taken to tracing the patterns engraved around the ring, and recreating them on the bottom of the spring. She still had no idea what the symbols meant, but she had copied them perfectly.

The sun rose, as it does every morning, but this day felt different. The girl floated to the top of the water and poked her head and eyes above the surface, not expecting anything, but compelled nonetheless.

“Aye, it’s come time at last.” It was the old woman in the purple cloak. She stood by the spring, smiling, and winked at the girl. “Figured it out, then?”

The girl shook her head. She was scared, having been alone for so long, and wasn’t sure whether she wanted the old woman to stay or go.

“Oh, so ye cast the circle of runes down there just on a whim?” The old woman laughed then, hoarse but warm. “Poor fool! Ah, but it’s almost over. He comes riding this way even now.”
