Lady Silver of the Spring – p.12

Sure enough, the girl heard the sound of a horse approaching, and presently the boy who’d dropped the ring came into view. When he saw the old woman, he let out a sigh of relief and waved to her.

“He hasn’t aged a day,” the old woman said, and the girl wondered how long it had been since the old woman had seen him, and how they knew each other.

The boy called out as he came closer, “Melinda, Melinda, our suffering is almost over!”

The old woman raised her head to look up at him on his fine horse, and shouted. “Suffering? What have ye suffered, in the terrible arms of eternal youth?” She then pointed to the girl in the spring. “As much or more than this poor wretch, no doubt?”

The boy looked over at the girl in the water and blushed. He bowed his head and said, “We are in your debt, of course.”

“And just how do ye intend to repay that?!”

The boy shrugged his shoulders. “Whatever the lady wishes, she shall have.”

“Can ye turn back the hands of time, then? For surely the year of her life ye have robbed her of would be at the top o’ the list.”

“Melinda, please, calm yourself. Let us complete the ritual and be away; the entire kingdom waits even now to see us wed.”
