There was a bright flash of lightning and a deafening crack of thunder. Cedar blinked, and when he looked again there was a great snake coiled in front of him, black with red and yellow stripes, and it raised its head.

“Thisss isss no place for a boy,” the snake said.

“I am nearly a man,” answered Cedar. “Who are you?”

The snake extended itself until its head was even with Cedar’s. “Namesss are unimportant. Deedsss interessst me more.”

“Fine then, what deeds have you done that I should know you by?”

“I have whissspered in the earsss of chief and ssslave alike, even yoursss from time to time. Tell me, are you alwaysss honessst?”
