Cedar Stormchaser – p.10

The skies were as gray as they had been since he left home, but now Cedar could feel the heat of the sun coming through the clouds and haze. The air was hot, and so was he.

Cedar noticed that there was no wind, and he was puzzled, since he knew he was coming closer to the storm. He could still smell the rain, and that made it harder to bear the dust he walked through. He did not run, could not run, and felt as if each step were going to drain him of his last bit of strength. He wondered if the men of his clan had taken such journeys, if this is what made them strong. He could not fail, so he stared down at his feet, willing them to move one step after another. He felt dizzy.

He did not know how long he had walked that way when the shadow appeared on the ground before him, but his neck was stiff as he tried to lift his head to see what cast it. He reached up to support his neck and looked up into the face of a smiling man with red and white stripes across his face, yellow feathers in his long, braided hair, and black eyes that sparkled like jewels. “I decided to come out to meet you, and save you the last few steps,” said the man.
