The Junk Box – p.2

The kid pulled out an old comic book, and set it aside. Then he dug a little deeper and found a big bag of green army men, and set them aside, too, while he tried to decide if he really wanted them.

After a while, the pile of toys and books and things he’d pulled out of the box was bigger than the box itself, and yet it was still full, and he kept seeing things he’d missed before. He knew he would never be able to get it all home in his pockets so he decided he should just take the whole box and figure it out later. He started to put the things back in the box that he’d pulled out, but they wouldn’t fit anymore. Even the smallest thing just rolled off the top, back onto the ground beside him.

He tried for several minutes to repack it, but every time he took something out, it refused to go back in—some other item would have appeared to take up the space. He could not empty the box, no matter how many things he took out. So he decided to pick it up and just dump it all out, and use it to take back only the things he wanted.

When he picked it up, he felt a tingle in the palms of his hands.
