The Junk Box – p.4

The kid’s friends all teased him, saying he was making up the story of the box, but in secret, some of them decided to check it out for themselves. Three boys went in the early evening to the house and snuck around back. The box sat where it was supposed to be, and the piles of toys and books the kid had told them about were there, too.

At first glance the contents of the box were unimpressive, but when they looked past the first layer, they began finding items of interest. Soon they each had a large pile, and just as their friend had said, the box was still full. They made a pact not to tell the kid that they’d come, and to guard the secret of the box from others. A never ending supply of free stuff was too good to share, and too tempting not to exploit.

Each day after school, the three boys would go back to rummage through the box, bringing bags with them to carry home their loot. They did not know that they had aroused suspicion, and were being watched.
