The Junk Box – p.6

As the others did before her, the girl explored the box, marveling at each subsequent discovery, and was shocked to learn that she could take more out than it seemed the box could have held in the first place. She, too, tried to put things back in the box and failed.

It wasn’t long before she had decided to take the box home, and made it safely to her room without being seen. There, she took a more scientific approach and began trying different ways to completely empty the box, shift its contents enough to see the bottom, or dump it out. She met with obstacles at every turn and soon had an enormous pile of books, stationery, hair clips and other trinkets littering her floor. She found a place to store everything and put the box in her closet, covering it with clothes, shoes, bags and blankets.

When her brother came home from school that afternoon, he was in such a bad mood that he went straight to his room and slammed the door. The girl grinned; though part of her desperately wanted to talk about the box with someone, it wouldn’t be him.
