The Junk Box – p.10

When the girl got home from the library and saw her room, her first thought was to go to the closet to check on the box. Finding it was gone, she marched straight to her little brother’s room. He wasn’t in, so she searched under his bed and in his closet. He didn’t have it, so she decided he must have taken it back to the hideout behind the abandoned house.

As she was heading back out to chase after her brother, she noticed that the door to her parents’ bedroom was ajar, and she could hear her mother laughing at something. She tip-toed over and peeked through the crack, and saw to her horror that her mother had the box, and was sitting on her bed, pulling out one thing after another, giggling like a child opening birthday presents.

The girl went back to her room in a panic. The secret was out; it was only a matter of time before her brother found out that she’d stolen it from him in the first place. Her mother had cleaned her room, violating her privacy, thrown out all the things she’d stashed away, and now was using the box to amass her own huge pile of stuff. Her panic quickly gave way to anger, and thoughts of revenge.
