Nuisance and the Nine Golden Keys – p.3

Rascal the cat thought for a moment. The mouse looked tasty enough, but it was tempting to have its help with a problem. “As it happens, my little snack cake, there is a place in the barn that I cannot explore, and it vexes me greatly. If you can fit, and discover its secrets for me, I will let you shelter from the rain there.” After the rains, thought Rascal, is another matter.

Nuisance squeaked his gratitude. “I will happily explore this space for you, good sir!” He took a few steps closer, then paused. “Perhaps you would lead the way?” He knew better than to ever really trust a cat.

Rascal leapt down from his perch, landing lightly on his feet despite his size. “This way,” he purred, and trotted off.

Inside the barn, Nuisance followed the cat under a hay loft, behind some old boxes filled with rusty tools, to a small hole in the wall. Rascal sniffed at it, then began grooming himself. “There is something shiny in there,” said the cat. “I cannot reach it with my paw. You go in and see what it is, and try to bring it out. I must have the shiny.”
