Jack sniffed at Nuisance and then sat back. “Come out, new friend! I’m Jack.”

Nuisance stepped out of the hole slowly, keeping an eye on the cat. “Well then, Jack, what did you want to play?”

“I like Fetch! Can you throw something, small friend?”

Rascal spoke up. “Of course not, don’t be absurd.” He inched closer to the mouse. “He’s too weak for that game.”

“I may not be able to throw,” Nuisance said, “but perhaps I could hide something for you to fetch instead?”

“Oh, yes! Yes, hide a thing, I will find it!” Jack said, his whole body wagging along with his tail.

Rascal’s tail went swish, swish, swish.

Nuisance dashed past the cat, past the dog, and stopped in front of the golden keys. “I’ll hide these out in the field, you both count to four and twenty, then come looking.” Without waiting for an answer, Nuisance grabbed the key ring in his mouth and ran from the barn.
