Nuisance and the Nine Golden Keys – p.13

Before Nuisance could react, they were surrounded by people who had all squatted down around the table and were poking their heads underneath. Many were cheering for the cat, suggesting he do terrible things to the poor mouse. Rascal grew bold, and took a swipe at Nuisance, who darted out of the way only to find himself within reach of a man with thick, hairy arms and holes in his smile where teeth may once have been. Nuisance ran from the man, then ran from the cat, then ran from more outstretched hands and went round in circles until he wasn’t sure which direction he was facing anymore. The keys were slowing him down but he dare not drop them.

In the mouse’s moment of dizziness and indecision, Rascal went in for the kill, claws extended. At the last second, Nuisance tried to duck and run under Rascal’s paw, but the keys had gotten caught on one of the cat’s claws, and Rascal howled as Nuisance pulled away. It was only a moment of confusion for the cat and the people watching, but in that moment Nuisance sped out from under the table and ran away blindly. After a few seconds he got his bearings and dashed off towards the big bird’s pen.
