Nuisance and the Nine Golden Keys – p.14

The prize gobbler watched as the mouse ran towards the pen. He was about to call out a greeting when he noticed that the mouse was being followed, first by a large cat, and then by a group of people. “My time has come,” said the bird, “the hungry crowd approacheth. I shan’t go quietly!” He began running back and forth, flapping his useless wings and puffing out his large chest.

Nuisance ran up to the gate, and climbed onto the iron lock. Before he could begin trying keys the cat and the others were upon him, so he dropped down inside and ran behind the bird for protection. “I fear I have brought an audience,” said the mouse.

“They may have us for their supper but not without a fight!” As first one, then another man climbed over the gate into the pen, the bird ran at them, gobbling at top volume, pecking at their feet and shins with his beak. They could not get their hands on him, and soon retreated. The crowd roared, laughing at the men and cheering on the bird.

Someone threw Rascal over the gate, but the cat knew better than to involve himself, and he slipped away. One after another, more men climbed into the pen to do battle with the gobbler, and each was rudely turned away.
