Nuisance and the Nine Golden Keys – p.15

The fight turned into a test for the stronger of the men gathered under the tent. The bird never gave ground, though they came at him from all sides. Nuisance kept up with all the advances and feints, never letting anyone get near the golden keys, but he felt assured that victory could not be theirs; they were plainly outnumbered. He had to come up with another approach.

Just then, Nuisance happened to see Jack, the dog, near the gate. He was wagging his tail and drooling a bit, enjoying himself a great deal. “Good sir bird,” Nuisance squeaked as loud as he could, “I must leave you for a moment, but I shall return. Do not let them defeat you in the meantime!”

“Take all the day and night, the fight shall rage on until I’ve bloodied every pair of shins in attendance!”

Nuisance bolted towards the dog, and stopped just under his slobbery chin. “Jack!”

The dog looked down, and let out an excited yelp. “Friend!” He cocked his head to one side. “Have you been trying to hide the shiny things all this time?”

“Yes, but it’s far too crowded to play in here; let me ride on your back and we’ll get out from under this tent.”
